ILLUMINATION. A wearable technology that acts as a hair extension, fitted with fibre optics and NeoPixels to create glowing and colourful lights for your hair.
This hairpiece was inspired by my love of all things bright and colourful. As the only main requirements of the brief were to keep it small and to make sure it lit up, I was immediately enamoured with the image of having pinpricks of lights—stars—in one’s hair. I set about experimenting with different materials and lights, finally settling on fibre optic strands, glued onto various NeoPixels set in a jewel ring, and then woven into a ponytail hair extension. I topped the uppermost section with fake flowers in order to hide the technology and give it a gentle, soft finish, before tucking the Arduino Lilypad into the shirt with a clip, its wires hidden neatly behind the falls of the ponytail. I’ve also programmed this model to feature two main modes: a continuous cycle of rainbows for those unicorn-loving wearers, and a glowing ring of white, for those who prefer all their colours as one.
This hairpiece was showcased at Victoria University's Wearable Technology Show on 28th October 2016, and was featured on the Adafruit blog.
